PE

PE at Northway is a vital part of the overall curriculum.

We see it as an integral part of each school day encouraging the children to start to take responsibility for their physical welfare and understand the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. PE helps our children to develop self-confidence and respect, both for themselves and for others. Through paired work and team games we develop co-operation and collaboration.

The curriculum encourages the children to develop their technical skills such as hand-eye co-ordination, ball handling skills, sense of balance and a confidence to develop their own ideas. We celebrate these achievements through ʻSports star of the Weekʼ Certificate Assembly on a Monday, and Special Achievements Assembly to celebrate our sporting success. We dedicate more than 3 hours per week to PE and School Sports, this is achieved through Dance, Swimming, PE (including Cricket, Boccia, Ball Skills, Gymnastics, Rebound Therapy, Sherborne, Athletics and Net/ invasion Games). We have an enthusiastic PE coach with more than 17 years of experience in a Special Needs Setting, who has and training from various institutions such as The British Gymnastics association, Active Barnet Training, Boccia, Panathlon training (table cricket, new age curling, polybat…), Sherborne and Tag Rugby with the Saracens training team.

Through our annual BPSS membership we access a variety of competitions such as Swimming Galas, Panthlons, Boccia, New Age Kurling and the Barnet Dance Festival, where the children get to compete and test their skills against other special and mainstream schools. We run an After Schools Club that include activities such as Yoga, Rebound Therapy, Swimming, Multi Skills, Dance and Healthy Cooking. We also have a lunch time club, change for life Boccia on a Friday.

We are very proud of our Silver KITE MARK that we achieved!
